SPL Junior Cup Final

Guildford Saints Blues 3 – 0 Staines Lammas Whites

The Blues ended another successful season in style when they won the Junior Cup at Bisley FC today.

The Blues set out their stall to shut down their opponents and attack in numbers at every opportunity, which they did to great effect.  Staines never really troubled the Blues throughout the game and on the rare occasions that they did break through, ‘keeper Josh Betts showed superb handling in wet and slippery conditions.

The Blues midfield of Mike Bell, Lawrence and Tom O dominated the first half rarely allowing Staines any useful possession and continually supplying good forward balls for Ed Davis and Jack Craig to run on to.  It was from one of these passes that Ed showed a great turn of speed and a fantastic left foot finish to put the Blues 1-0 up.  A great Harry Edwards corner nearly led to a second before minutes later Ed twisted and turned his way past a Staines defender before slamming the ball home for number two.  James Busby, Marcus, Jacob and Rob shored up the back limiting Staines to a few scrambled efforts throughout the half.

In the second half the Blues again continued to dominate.  Mike Petri replaced the tiring Lawrence and Josh Henderson came on up front.  Josh led the line well and had a number of opportunities to score before he eventually rounded the Staines ‘keeper and tickled the ball home off the post to seal the win for the Blues.  Dominic Dubois replaced James Busby late on at right back and made a couple of crucial tackles in the dying seconds.

Credit to Staines they battled for the whole 70 minutes but the Blues were determined throughout and put in a resilient and robust performance.

The boys fully deserved their victory on the back of some great performances in this season’s cup run.  The celebrated in style at the end with a mass swallow dive into the goal mouth.  Mike Bell then proudly led his team up to get the cup from SPL U13 age group secretary, Fred Darlington.

Managers Comments:  Thoroughly delighted for, and proud of the lads, not just today but through the whole season.  When they have needed to they have really knuckled down and put in the performances that matter.  The cup success is well deserved and completes another successful season.

Man of the Match:  Ed Davis/Josh Betts – one from each end of the pitch.  I could not separate either of these two players – they were magnificent today.

Improving Player: James Busby – had a great game at right back today and showed good improvement in his positioning and decision making.

Lower Green 3-3 Guildford Saints Blues (Davis 2, Bird)

The Blues closed off their league campaign with a thrilling 3-3 draw at Lower Green - the third draw between the sides this season!

Starting slowly the Blues looked like a bunch of strangers for the first few minutes as they failed to make more than two consecutive passes and gave their opponents time and space all over the pitch - it was no surprise that Lower Green took the lead when a strong run by one of their strikers tore right through the centre of our defence and a powerful shot was fired into the corner of the net. This setback seemed to rally the lads and we began to take more control of the game. Eventually, after a period of Blues pressure, Ed Davis volleyed a Harry Edwards corner into the roof of the net for an equaliser. Within minutes Ed added a second when a lovely turn of pace saw him skip past a Lower Green defender before shooting early, leaving the goalkeeper stranded. Shortly before half time Alex Oldland was replaced by Lawrence Bird in midfield and - with his first touch of the ball - Lawrence stabbed home a rebound to make it 3-1.

In the second half Lower Green lifted their game and the Blues struggled to contain their uncompromising tackling and direct running. Although Green were the dominant side the Blues worked very hard to match the effort and commitment of their opponents and looked to have contained them when a hugely controversial decision by the linesman awarded Lower Green a goal when a shot hit the post and appeared to rebound out from the goal but was adjudged to have crossed the line first - a feat that defies the law of physics!!!

The impetus was with Lower Green now and, urged on by their vociferous support, they poured forward in waves and created a number of chances but, just like the Cup semi final two weeks ago. Blues 'keeper Josh Betts was in marvelous form showing great bravery and good handling to keep the home team at bay. Blues chances during this period were limited but Ed Davis had a great opportunity to clinch his hat trick but ran the ball too close to the goal keeper and Jack Craig also broke clear only to put his shot inches over the bar. With minutes remain Lower Green eventually managed to fire home a deserved equaliser to make it 3-3 and the game was played out to a draw.

The Blues finish the season in third place and a probable second promotion in two seasons - a marvelous achievement by the boys. Well done!

Managers Comments - a good performance in the end showing that as well as good skill we also have some back bone in the side and when we need to knuckle down and battle we can. I can't let this game go by though without mentioning the truly inept and biased performance of the referee. As most of you know I rarely am moved by or comment on the officials but today I was extremely disappointed by the lack of protection given to our players and, also, the total bias of the referee towards the home side. The nature of some people is to just win at all costs - in my opinion, this referee put my players in danger by allowing dangerous challenges against the Blues to go unpunished, so encouraging more and more as the game went on, as "his side" pursued victory. I think this is the unacceptable face of youth football and I can fully understand - if not condone - the anger and upset of some of the Blues players at the end of the match.†

Man of the Match: Josh Betts - another tremendous performance from Josh who is in the form of his life at the moment. Combined great handling with bravery today and kept the Blues in the game, particularly in the second half

Most Improved Player: Mike Bell - had another fine game in midfield with a performance of energy and commitment combined with strong forward runs and defence splitting passing

SPL Junior Cup Semi-Final

Guildford Saints Blues 1 – 1 Lower Green (aet)

Guildford Saints Blues win 4-3 on penalties

Following the impressive victory over Claygate in the quarter finals, the Blues had to put in a battling performance against a very physical Lower Green side in order to reach this year’s Junior Cup Final.

In the first half, a very "flat" Blues side struggled to create any meaningful chances and it was no surprise that Lower Green took the lead shortly before half time. After a few passionate words in the interval, the Blues played the second half with more desire, creating more chances and battling hard to regain possession. Jacob Rudman, in particular, had an outstanding game at centre back and in midfield, Tom Oldland, Mike Bell and Dominic Dubois, worked extremely hard. However, it was a typical Harry Edwards free kick that finally achieved the Blues a deserved equaliser, when the young winger floated a lofted ball over the despairing Lower Green ‘keeper to make it 1-1.

In a tight match, extra time was inevitable and despite a couple of good chances for either side, the lottery of penalties proved the only way to separate the sides.

Josh Betts, who had been faultless throughout the ninety minutes, proved to be the hero of the shoot-out with three fabulous saves. It was fitting that Harry Edwards slotted home the winning penalty as it was his fine goal that had saved the day in normal time. Well done to all those players – Ed Davis, Rob Butter, Josh Henderson, Josh Betts, Marcus Taylor and Harry Edwards who were all brave enough to step forward when required.

Managers Comments: Heart attacks aside, this was a real gutsy performance from the boys. We were not at the races today but we still won through showing character, bravery and determination.

Man of the Match: Jacob Rudman/Josh Betts – I cannot separate the two. They were both immense today.

Improving Player: Ed Davis – extremely lively and never gave up. Ed is always a threat to the opposition defence.

9th March 2008

SPL Junior Cup Quarter Final

Claygate Foleys 0 – 1 Guildford Saints Blues (Davis)

The Blues produced a performance of energy, commitment, desire, character and good skill to book their place in the semi finals of this seasons Cup.

From the start the Blues took the game to Claygate – easily the best footballing side in Division Four this season. The tackling was strong and the passing crisp as the Blues forced Claygate into mistakes and broke quickly and well, particularly down the right where Jack Craig, Mike Bell and Ed Davis were truly excellent today. Despite having the lions share of possession, a strong Claygate defence prevented the Blues from creating any clear cut scoring opportunities until Ed Davis turned well to manoeuvre some space for himself and then coolly slotted home past the out of position Claygate goal keeper to give the Blues the lead.

The game swung from end to end but the Blues defended bravely when required and goalkeeper Josh Betts confidently dealt well with any Claygate chances that did sneak through. The Blues midfield continued to dominate the game though and Harry Edwards twice had good chances to increase the lead later in the half but couldn’t quite find the target

In the second half the Blues were heroic as Claygate threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser. Rob Butter and Marcus Taylor were both involved in last ditch tackles that prevented Claygate breaking through and, again, Josh Betts confidently kept Claygate at bay with some excellent handling and timely saves. Ed, and later James Busby, toiled hard as the lone striker and regularly helped relieve the pressure on the Blues defence by holding the ball up well. Mike Bell, Tom Oldland and Mike Petri, later Lawrence Bird, worked tirelessly in midfield to prevent any meaningful Claygate possession and despite the odd Claygate opportunity in the final minutes the result was never really in any doubt.

When the final whistle went there was much delight amongst the players, management and supporters as they appreciated what a good performance the Blues had put in to achieve a deserved result.

Managers Comments: What a really great performance from the whole team today. Everyone gave all they had and we beat a really good team. I’m very proud of the boys today. As a coach I couldn’t really ask for more. Well done to everyone involved but particularly need to mention Josh Betts, Rob Butter and Marcus Taylor for their outstanding performances - SC

Man of the Match: Mike Bell – Captain Fantastic never stopped tackling, running and passing. Set a wonderful tempo for the team. Great performance

Improving Player: Jack Craig – the improvement was there for all to see today. Tired and was replaced in the second half but another excellent example of commitment and energy.

2nd March 2008

SPL Division Four

Guildford Saints Blues 5-1 Aldershot Boys Cobras

The Blues stormed in to an early 3-0 lead thanks to two well taken Josh Henderson goals and an excellent strike from Alex Oldland before coming unstuck against a dogged Aldershot defence and an excellent Aldershot ‘keeper. Following these early strikes, the Blues continued to hold the majority of possession but failed to add to the score in the first half, primarily due to some very poor finishing. Shortly before half time Aldershot gave themselves a lifeline when a lack of communication between goalkeeper Josh Betts and defender Marcus Taylor, allowed an Aldershot striker to sneak between them and slot home. To compound this poor period of play, the Blues then missed a penalty right on the interval.

Changes were made at half time but still the Blues struggled to find a way around the Aldershot ‘keeper despite making more clear cut opportunities. Eventually, from a corner, Rob Butter headed the ball back in to the area and James Busby flicked the ball in to relieve the Blues’ nerves. Busby, who looked lively up front in the second half, subsequently added a fifth to give the score line a slightly more favourable shine.

Good performances today from KN, Alex Oldland, Josh Henderson and Dominic Dubois as the Blues closed out their last home league game of the season.

Managers Comments: With the start we had I thought we were in for double figures today but too many key players were off form and our finishing will need to improve before next week’s massive cup match at Claygate.

Man of the Match: Alex Oldland – an excellent, energetic performance and some improved distribution as well as a well taken goal.

Improving Player: KN – excellent performance up front with some good energy and nice interplay.

24th February 2008

SPL Division Four

Knaphill Wanderers 3-8 Guildford Saints Blues

Knaphill’s poor record this season allowed the Blues the opportunity to rest two of their best performers this year in centre backs Marcus Taylor and Jacob Rudman. This allowed Daniel Limbu to make his first start for the team and Harri Crabb to join the squad for his debut.

Knaphill started brightly and stormed forward from the kick off, however, the Blues makeshift defence looked solid with Limbu playing in a holding midfield role. After ten minutes an inch perfect through ball from Rob Butter set Harry Edwards away and our leading scorer duly converted. Minutes later Rob again provided the assist and Harry doubled the lead. Never one to be outdone, Ed Davis slotted home a third before a fine cross come shot from Jack Craig made it 4-0. Tom Oldland added the fifth forcing the Knaphill goalkeeper into a clumsy error and the Blues went in 6-0 up at half-time thanks to another goal from Ed Davis.

A reshuffle at half-time brought all four subs into action, however, this had a detrimental effect on the Blues as they spent the next ten minutes giving away possession, failing to win tackles and …..conceding three goals!

After this the Blues regained a certain amount of composure and shape as they withstood some Knaphill pressure before counter-attacking and going on to win the game well. Harry Edwards completed his hat-trick for the team’s seventh and the hard work of Alex Oldland was rewarded shortly before full-time when the young midfielder got his just rewards after some excellent play to score the eighth.

Josh Henderson looked very accomplished as the team’s centre-forward for the last twenty minutes and staked his claim well for a place up front next weekend.

Managers Comments: A good first half followed by a very dicey ten minutes in the second…. no wonder I haven’t got a lot of hair left! Extremely pleased with the performances of Rob Butter, Daniel Limbu, Alex Oldland and Harry Edwards who all put in a very good shift this morning.

Man of the Match: Rob Butter – superb performance from Rob, back in the side after a week’s rest. Two fabulous assists and some great defensive work.

Improving Player: Alex Oldland – a storming performance in midfield. Drove the team on and a well deserved goal in the end.

SPL Division Four

Potley Predators 2-4 Guildford Saints Blues

The Blues surprisingly emerged as victors after this lethargic and thoroughly disjointed performance. The first half in particular was possibly one of the poorest displays of football by the Blues this season but Potley failed to take advantage and went into the interval leading by only one goal, a scrambled effort that the Blues were unable to clear despite numerous opportunities. Changes were made at half time with the introduction of Harry Edwards and debutant, KN and the effect was immediate, Harry started causing all sorts of problems for Potley on their right hand side and KN’s energy livening up an otherwise very "tired looking" Blues midfield.

A pinpoint Edwards free kick was met at the far post by a glancing Tom Oldland header for the equaliser and, minutes later the Blues were ahead when Harry sneaked into the box and scored himself. Although Potley equalised with a typical route one goal that caught our two centre backs at sixes and sevens, KN tucked our third goal away midway through the half to cap a very good first performance for the team.

Also making his debut was Chris Smith who had an accomplished game at left back.

The Blues’ slightly undeserved victory was sealed ten minutes from the end when the marauding Ed Davis used his speed to break clear of the Potley defence before slotting home.

Managers Comments: Despite a collective poor performance, the boys showed good character and a never-say-die attitude to achieve this victory. We have played much better and lost this season so it is quite nice to have luck on our side for a change.

Man of the Match: Harry Edwards – the game was changed by the introduction of Harry whose dead ball delivery is a massive weapon for us now.

Improving Player: KN – great performance, full of energy and determination.

27 January 2008

SPL Division Four

Guildford Saints Blues 1-2 Farncombe Dynamos (Butter)

The Blues suffered the late loss of leading scorer Harry Edwards, injured before the match, but still put in a gutsy and brave performance against high flying Farncombe Dynamos. The loss of Edwards looked to be crucial in the first exchanges though as the Blues struggled to clear their lines or create any constructive attacks. When a penalty was conceded and converted midway through the half, after a careless tackle from Tom Oldland, the writing was on the wall. Credit to the Blues though who rolled their sleeves up and didn’t let their heads drop.

Farncombe defended well and counter attacked with speed throughout the first half and just as the Blues thought that they had got a grip on their opponents, it was a Farncombe counter attack that was finished superbly to give the Dynamos a two goal advantage. Mike Petri had a great chance to pull a goal back shortly before half time but with the whole goal to aim at he struck his shot straight at the keeper.

After a formation change at half time it was all Blues in the second half. Dominic Dubois had a fantastic chance to score but miss hit his shot and Ed Davis was twice clean through only to run the ball too close to the brave Farncombe ‘keeper. Jack Craig also had a couple of efforts but these too were saved by the ‘keeper. Ed Davis was proving a handful to the Farncombe defence and was involved in nearly every Blues attack while Mike Bell and Tom Oldland worked tirelessly in midfield. Josh Betts had a fine game in goal which was noted by watching first team manager, Kevin Oldland.

Eventually from a corner, Rob Butter turned superbly in the box and struck home a goal for the Blues but despite a continued onslaught on the Dynamos goal, the Blues could not manage to find what would have been a deserved equaliser.

Managers Comments: I cannot fault the lads’ efforts today, the second half performance was possibly our best second half performance of the season. Unfortunately our finishing today was not so good otherwise I think we would have won this game.

Man of the Match: Ed Davis – covered every blade of grass today and was involved in nearly everything that was good in our attacking play.

Improving Player: Rob Butter – a rock at the back and a superb goal too!

13 January 2008

SPL Junior Cup Round 1

Guildford Saints Blues 2 – 0 Chertsey Town Whites

The Blues had to work very hard to break down a resolute Chertsey side before earning their place in the second round of this season’s Junior Cup.

The Blues dominated from the start, retaining good possession and launching attack after attack against the Division 5 side. Chertsey put large numbers of players behind the ball and at times the Blues found it frustrating that they could not seem to break them down. Harry Edwards, in particular, was again a thorn in the opposition’s side with some excellent runs and strong challenges. Any threat that Chertsey did pose was quickly tidied up by the dominant defending of Jacob Rudman and Marcus Taylor.

The Blues thought that they had broken the deadlock twenty minutes into the match when James Busby fired home from a Jacob flick-on but the goal was harshly ruled out for an apparent infringement on the Chertsey ‘keeper.

Eventually, minutes before half-time, the Blues did get their just rewards when Ed Davis latched onto a loose ball to poke home from close range.

The second half saw a small reshuffle of the Blues side with the introduction of the team skipper, Mike Bell and right midfielder, Jack Craig. The Blues continued to control the game and dominate possession as Chertsey defended for their lives. As Chertsey tired though, the Blues began to find more space, particularly on the flanks and it was a great cross from the right wing that gave the Blues their second and sealed the victory when an unfortunate Chertsey defender slammed the ball into the roof of his own net.

The all-round team effort today was good but in particular Marcus, Jacob, Mike Petri and Ed were outstanding.

Managers Comments: Delighted with the result and delighted also with the fact that the team did not get frustrated and continued to try and play good passing football around a very resolute Chertsey defence…. and a clean sheet as well. Bonus!!!

Man of the Match: Ed Davis – a really, really good striker’s performance from Ed today and a deserved goal.

Improving Player: Mike Petri – really got around the midfield today shutting the opposition down, winning good balls and supplying some great passes.

6 January 2008

SPL Division Four

Guildford Saints Blues 3 – 2 Staines Lammas Whites

In a close but enjoyable game the Blues started the New Year with a good win.

From the start the Blues were in control of the match pressing their opponents quickly, latching on to the "second balls" and counter attacking with good speed. Mike Bell and Tom Oldland saw a lot of the ball in the early exchanges and Mike, in particular, was distributing the ball well, quite often setting the marauding Harry Edwards free with some defence splitting passes. Harry was outstanding in the first half constantly threatening the opposition with his pace and driving runs towards the Staines goal and it was no surprise that it was he that scored the first two goals for the Blues to give them a comfortable half time lead. Another player who caught the eye in the first half was the impressive Jacob Rudman who regularly stepped forward to meet the ball early, snuffing out any of the rare Staines attacks with some timely headers and interceptions.

In the second half the Blues lost the impetus somewhat and Staines began to look more threatening as they tended to get more possession and time on the ball when the Blues stood off them in midfield. However, the opposition rarely looked like scoring until a hopeful cross into the box was deflected into his own net by an unfortunate Jacob midway through the half. This piece of good fortune visibly lifted the Staines players and supporters and, although Tom Oldland finished superbly minutes later to restore the two goal advantage, the away team were the more likely to score in the final third of the game. A Staines goal six minutes from time only encouraged them even more and they looked to have snatched an equaliser in the final seconds of the game as they stumbled the ball over the line only for the referee to rule it out for offside much to the relief of the Blues defence.

Managers Comments: Again we put in an excellent first half display only to nearly throw it all away with a tired looking performance in the later stages of the game. We must improve our fitness levels and concentration otherwise we will be throwing away points that should rightfully be ours!

Man of the Match: Tom Oldland – ran the game from start to finish. Staines paid Tom the ultimate compliment by sending on a player to man mark him midway through the first half… he never even got near him!!

Improving Player: Jacob Rudman – improves every week but must improve his concentration towards the end of games. Had an outstanding first half today!

16 December 2007

SPL Division Four

Walton & Hersham 2-2 Guildford Saints Blues

(Davis 2)

In this match, Guildford Saints Blues worked extremely hard to earn a point from a massively improved Walton & Hersham side. Guilty of over-confidence, having beaten Walton 9-0 last month, the Blues looked a shadow of their usual self in the first half, failing to close the opposition down and unable to gain good possession on a frosty surface. The Blues went in 0-0 at half-time after a brave save by ‘keeper James Chadwick midway through the first half, diving feet first at an on-rushing Walton attacker.

After some strong half time words the Blues looked a different side at the start of the second half. Within minutes of the restart Ed Davis burst through to open the scoring. However, instead of spurring the Blues on, this seemed to galvanise Walton who again began to dominate possession and break with speed. Midway through the second half Walton equalised with the Blues’ defence all at sea, despite a suspicion of off side.

When Walton caught Rob Butter in possession late in the game and then scrambled their second goal, it looked like game over. An immediate change to a more attacking 3-5-2 formation paid dividends though for the Blues as Jack Craig sprinted through to an inch perfect Tom Oldland pass only to be cruelly hacked from behind just inside the penalty area. The ever dependable Ed Davis executed the resultant penalty with his usual aplomb!

The Blues could have gone on to win it with a couple of late chances but in all reality the draw was a fair result.

Managers Comments: Despite an all-round "average" performance, the Blues showed great character to come back into this game when they looked down and out.

Man of the Match: Tom Oldland – Tom’s never say die attitude and hugely improved passing this season have made him a vital part of the team.

Improving Player: Ed Davis – Our little "super striker", although not at his best today, still manages to score the most crucial of goals.

9 December 2007

SPL Division Four

Guildford Saints Blues 5 – 4 Feltham Youth

A dramatic game of two halves saw the Blues demolish Feltham in the first 35 minutes and then nearly throw it all away in the second period.

From the first whistle the Blues were excellent in attack using the full width of the pitch and breaking with speed. After five minutes Jack Craig opened the scoring when Mike Bell put him through with a lovely pass. Jack still had some work to do but finished well. Ed Davis then added a second minutes later with a cool finish. Feltham continued to battle strongly despite this early set back and were rewarded midway through the half with a goal from the penalty spot. Tom Oldland then restored the two goal advantage driving the ball home after some good work to regain possession on the edge of the area. Harry Edwards made it 4-1, smashing the ball through a body of players on the Feltham line. Feltham worked hard then to push forward and were rewarded just before half time with a second goal only to see Jack Craig charge straight down the other end to make it 5-2, latching on to another fine Mike Bell pass and finishing with confidence.

In the second half it was all Feltham. The visitors were eventually gifted a goal midway through the half by some woeful defending and this then gave them the momentum to dominate possession and carry the game to the Blues. To their credit the Blues didn’t let their heads drop battling bravely, particularly in midfield and defence. Five minutes before the end Feltham finally got a deserved fourth leaving us with a tension filled last few minutes but, fortunately, the Blues were able to hold out for an important win which now puts us eight points ahead of Feltham.

Managers Comments: An excellent first half display and a dogged and determined second half where the boys showed great character not to wilt under pressure. Despite some poor defending at times by the whole team, I think that in the end we were the deserved winners.

Man of the Match: Mike Bell – captain fantastic again in midfield creating goals and winning vital tackles.

Improving Player: Jack Craig – a great first half but the improvement is in his willingness to track back and work harder to regain possession.

2 December 2007

SPL Division Four

Guildford Saints Blues 6 – 1 Potley Predators

After a couple of disappointing results it was good to see the Blues put in a fine winning performance again, despite atrocious weather conditions.

An organised Potley side managed to constrain the Blues in the early stages of the game until Harry Edwards out-muscled their right back before slotting home for the opener. Centre forward, Ed Davis, coolly slid home a penalty to double the lead shortly after and the Blues never looked back. Just before half time Davis added his second to give the team a well deserved 3 – 0 half time lead.

The Blues all round team performance was excellent. The defence of James B, Marcus, Jacob and Rob, in particular, had an outstanding first half maintaining good shape, winning tackles cleanly, covering for each other and clearing their lines well. However, it was the midfield trio of Tom, Mike P and Mike B that particularly caught the eye with strong, committed performances from all three players that never allowed Potley any real possession and created numerous chances for Jack, Ed & Harry..

In the second half the Blues continued to dominate. Ed tapped in a Harry Edwards cross to complete his hat-trick then shortly after Edwards was on hand to tap in an identical James Busby cross for his second before completing his hat-trick ten minutes from the end. Jack Craig had a couple of late chances but on both occasions the Potley keeper saved well.

Managers Comments: The result was very pleasing but the all round team performance was excellent. Particular praise goes to the midfield and the hard work of our defence. It is no coincidence that in the last couple of weeks the players’ attitudes in training have improved and as a consequence we have again put in a good team performance.

Man of the Match: Tom Oldland – again another outstanding performance from Tom with massively improved passing.

Improving Player: Rob Butter – superb performance from Rob at left back and massively improved concentration.

18 November 2007

SPL Division Four

Farncombe Boys Dynamos 3-0 Guildford Saints Blues

The Blues suffered the late loss of three key players for this important league fixture but even that could not excuse the fact that for the second week running we were clearly the second best team on the pitch. The writing was on the wall early on when Farncombe shut us down quickly all over the pitch and worked the ball into the net only for the goal to be chalked off for offside. Blues could rarely get out of their own half and when Farncombe did take the lead from a free kick it looked as though it was going to be very difficult to get back in the match. The Blues players worked hard to win possession back at times but all to soon it was lost again with sloppy passes or by dwelling on the ball too long.

Just before half time the otherwise excellent Tom Oldland was unable to clear and a quick pouncing Farncombe striker put them two up (this was an excellent example of what we should be doing to our opponents and putting them under pressure high up the pitch).

Unfortunately the lesson wasn’t learned and the Farncombe third goal, midway through the second half, came from the same thing – a Farncombe striker latching quickly on to a poor, under pressure Blues clearance to hammer home. Again credit to the Blues players for continuing to at least try and get a goal back but, in all honesty, we never really looked like scoring bar a couple of long range efforts which were dealt with comfortably by the keeper.

Managers Comments: As a coach I think I have to lower my expectations a little this season. My frustration was there for all to see today but I think we need to remember that these boys have only been playing 11 a side football for one and a half seasons. We have now played two really good Division Four sides and we clearly need to work on a number of aspects of our game as we are not yet good enough to compete with them. If only the players would realise this and apply themselves in training more then perhaps when it comes to the return match in March we can give Farncombe a proper match - SC

Man of the Match: Tom Oldland – two costly mistakes but one of the few players up for the battle and showing good consistency of form. Always stands up to be counted when the going gets tough

Improving Player: Lawrence Bird – good effort, particularly in the second half and strong running all over the pitch.

11 November 2007

SPL Division Four

Guildford Saints Blues 1 – 3 Claygate Foleys (Edwards)

A performance to forget for the Blues as they suffered their first defeat of the season against Claygate. Having already played the Foleys this season the Blues knew that they would be up against a well organised and skilful side but, unfortunately, our display today was lack lustre and Claygate were able to take full advantage.

From the start Blues were on the back foot with Claygate attacking quickly and winning a corner. From this, a well worked short corner, a cross was whipped in to the Blues box and, although keeper Josh Betts saved it brilliantly, he could only push the ball against the legs of an oncoming striker and it rebounded back into the unguarded net. Seconds later however the Blues were back in it when a trade mark Harry Edwards free kick dipped over the stranded keeper for 1-1.

The remainder of the first half was a struggle for the Blues as regularly Claygate were first to the ball and created much the better chances. The fact that the Blues went into half time level was in the main down to some sound goalkeeping from Josh.

In the second half as more pressure was put on the Blues defence the gaps started appearing and almost inevitably Claygate scored the next goal when the otherwise faultless Betts appeared to dive to early to save a half shot and the ball flew passed him into the net. Josh certainly redeemed himself though as a barrage of Claygate attacks were thwarted by his brave goalkeeping. Towards the end Claygate added a third as again Blues were desperately poor in defence allowing the Foleys right winger acres of space to drill in a low cross that was tapped home.

Managers Comments: Overall the performance today was poor and not up to the standard we have set ourselves in previous weeks. Too many of our players were off their game and no one took any responsibility when it was needed to either step up the pressure on Claygate or take the game to them. As a defensive unit, in particular, today we were appalling and there will be changes for next weekend. Praise though to Josh Betts, Josh Henderson, Tom Oldland & Mike Petri who I thought were the only players up to the task. All that being said, Claygate are a very good team, but we must rise to the challenge of playing against these teams not hide from it!!

Man of the Match: Josh Betts – kept the score respectable with some good, confident goalkeeping

Improving Player: Josh Henderson – another solid 70 minutes from our Mr Consistent at right back. A calm head under pressure and, as always, 100% effort throughout.

4 November 2007

SPL Division Four

Guildford Saints Blues 9 – 0 Walton & Hersham

(Edwards 5, Davis, Craig, Busby, T Oldland)

In beautiful, warm Autumn sunshine, Guildford Saints Blues cruised to their most emphatic and comfortable victory of the season so far. The Blues stormed into a 3-0 lead within three minutes of the start with Harry Edwards (2) and Ed Davis latching onto and punishing some very weak Walton defending. Jack Craig added a fourth shortly after and Harry Edwards added two more before half-time in a very one-sided first half.

Walton provided slightly more opposition in the second half but still the Blues dominated with goalkeeper, James Chadwick, rarely touching the ball thanks to a very strong defensive performance from Josh, Dominic, Jacob and Rob. Midway through the half Harry added his fifth to cap another excellent performance from the winger. Substitute James Busby was on hand to tap in the team’s eighth and shortly before the end, the dynamic Tom Oldland scored a well deserved goal to rap up yet another nine goal haul.

Managers Comments: We will not get an easier game this season but I was delighted with the overall defensive performance of the team and as always our finishing was clinical.

Man of the Match: Harry Edwards – yet another outstanding goal scoring performance from Harry.

Improving Player: Tom Oldland – a strong, driving performance in midfield from Tom and a very well taken and deserved goal.

SPL Division Four

Staines Lammas Whites 1 – 4 Guildford Saints Blues (Davis, Edwards 3)

The Blues squad was stretched to its limits with only eleven players available for this match. However, despite the loss of a number of key players, they recorded a valuable away win. Staines started the stronger of the two teams and should have been ahead when their striker missed an open goal from just three yards out. The Blues rallied after this and produced a strong performance full of grit and determination throughout the remainder of the half but without any end result.

After a slight re-organisation at half time the Blues were quickly back in their stride and began to play the quick, expansive football which we have become used to. Ed Davis, as always, caused the opposition defence innumerable problems with his electric pace and it was not long before he put us ahead with a typical breakaway goal. Harry Edwards was also giving the Staines’ right back a torrid time and in a short period of five minutes scored a high quality, quick fire hat trick to kill the game off.

Staines huffed and puffed but found a resilient Blues midfield where Mike Petri in particular shone and it was not until the final few seconds of the game that Staines finally breached the Blues defence with a looping shot over ‘keeper Josh Betts for a consolation goal.

Managers Comments: An excellent result and a good all round performance from the lads. When we look back at the end of the season, good results like this could be very important!!

Man of the Match: Harry Edwards – a fine performance with clinical finishing.

Improving Player: Mike Petri – an industrious, aggressive and hard-working performance.

SPL Premier Division

Guildford Saints 2-2 Lower Green (Edwards, Petri)

The Blues entered this game with some trepidation following a difficult fixture last season against these opponents but that was quickly dispelled when Harry Edwards put them into the lead early in the match. Edwards was outstanding down the left flank, always causing the Lower Green defence problems with his marauding runs – and his goal was well deserved. Mike Petri was also on top of his game with some excellent tackling and good work rate. He too got on the score sheet shortly before half time to give the Blues a deserved 2-0 lead.

In the second half Lower Green came into the game more. Their strong physical presence and intimidating crowd seemed to have a negative effect on the Blues’ players who were second to the ball on numerous occasions. Lower Green pulled one back midway through the half when the lack of pace in the Blues defence was again exposed. Shortly before the end, just when the Blues looked to have weathered the storm, an unfortunate mistake by goalkeeper Josh Betts gifted Lower Green an equaliser. This was doubly disappointing for Betts who had otherwise been outstanding and hard on the Blues defence which had defended strongly and with commitment.

Managers Comments: A disappointing result but a good performance. We will not face much more physical opponents this season and the boys acquitted themselves bravely.

Man of the Match: Harry Edwards – another superb performance from Harry, full of pace and energy.

Improving Player: Mike Petri – good to see Mike back in the excellent sort of form that he was in last season. Tigerish tackling and strong running.

SPL Division Four

Aldershot Boys Cobras 3 - 9 Guildford Saints Blues (Davis 3, Edwards 2,

Henderson 2, Butter, Bell)

The Blues continued their fine start to the season with another emphatic victory over one of last seasons opponents, scoring nine goals for the third time in four matches.

Ed Davis is proving to be the star of the season as another quick fire hat trick within the first 15 minutes of the match quickly killed off their opponents hopes of making a game out of it. Mike Bell added a fourth with the goal of the game while Harry Edwards, as always, waited in he wings before nicking a couple of goals for himself either side of half time.

Rob Butter added a seventh and super sub striker Josh Henderson backed up an excellent first half performance in defence with another lively cameo up front for the last fifteen minutes and helped himself to two excellently taken goals.

The all round team performance today was good. The defence sometimes came under pressure from our old weakness of the ball over the top but the midfield today worked very hard to prevent the through balls being played in the first place and, in particular, Tom Oldland & Dominic Dubois were excellent. Tom challenged and tackled all over the park like a man possessed and Dominic covered acres of ground today picking up loose balls and linking between defence and attack. Jack, Harry & Ed, as always, maintained great width and shape up front and always we looked dangerous going forward.

Managers Comments: delighted with the result and pleased with the fact that we now seem to be finding some good consistency of performance. This is the third game in a row that we have played well. The confidence of the team is growing all the time and some individuals are really beginning to excel. Well done, boys - SC

Man of the Match: Tom Oldland - a great performance. Never stopped working hard and showed great improvement in his distribution

Improving Player: Dominic Dubois - at last Dominic has recovered is excellent form of previous seasons. Today he was back to his best, covering ground all over the park and therefore finding himself in the right place at the right time!!

SPL Division Four

Guildford Saints Blues 9 – 2 Knaphill Wanderers Avalanche

(Davis 5, Edwards 3, Henderson)

The Blues knocked nine passed their opponents for the second home game in a row but this time the all round performance was much better too. Knaphill took a shock lead only moments into the game when a looping shoot sneaked under the cross bar. Blues took this early set back in their stride and quickly took control of the game with some good attacking shape and pace. Skipper Mike Bell was outstanding in midfield with some great tackling and excellent distribution. Partnered by the superb Tom Oldland and pacy Dominic Dubois the Blues midfield were rock solid throughout the 70 minutes giving Knaphill limited scope to play.

The front three of Ed Davis, Harry Edwards & Jack Craig, as always, looked very dangerous every time the Blues broke and it was inevitable that the in form Davis would eventually slot home two of the numerous Guildford chances to give the Blues a 2-1 half time lead.

In the first ten minutes of the second half the Blues "blew" their opponents away with four very quick goals – two more from Davis and two from the marauding Harry Edwards. Knaphill rallied when they scrambled home a second when a rare lapse of concentration allowed their right wing to sneak in and score well from close range. However there was only ever one team in it as Davis scored his fifth, Edwards completed his hat trick and Josh Henderson, playing as the sole striker for the last ten minutes, finished superbly for the teams ninth.

Managers Comments: Another good win and a very solid performance from our defence and midfield too. We won the ball back well, kept our shape and took our chances superbly. Well done to everyone involved! - SC

Man of the Match: Michael Bell – some wonderful distribution and some great midfield play. Takes some performance to win M.O.M over a player that scored five goals!!

Improving Player: Jacob Rudman – a massive improvement and a great performance. Well done Jacob.

 SPL Division Four

Claygate Foleys 2 – 2 Guildford Saints Blues (Davis, Bell)

Points shared and honours even at the end of this hugely entertaining fixture at Claygate Rec. The Blues recalled Dominic Dubois to the team and gave Lawrence Bird a start at left back as they returned to their 4-5-1 formation for this fixture.

It was apparent from the start that the Blues faced their toughest challenge of the season so far as Claygate started the livelier of the two teams, passing the ball well and maintaining a good width to their play. However, it was the Blues who took the lead when a long Josh Betts kick caught Claygate flat footed and allowed Ed Davis to slip in and stroke the ball past the keeper… a good old fashioned route one goal!!

This goal gave the Blues confidence and they began to come more in to the game. Davis, in particular, was a handful for the home defence and three times his well timed runs put him one on one with the goalkeeper who saved bravely at his feet on all occasions. Claygate were always dangerous though themselves, especially on the counter attack and from set pieces and it was no surprise when they eventually breached the Blues rearguard from a corner to bring the scores level. Shortly before half time another quick Claygate attack lead to the home side going into the interval 2-1 up.

The importance of getting back into the game quickly was emphasised at half time and Mike Bell took up the challenge superbly lobbing the keeper within minutes of the restart to bring the scores level again.

The game continued to ebb and flow from end to end for the remainder of the match and either team good have nicked it from the numerous chances created but in the end a draw was a fair result for a game of high drama and some excellent football.

Managers Comments: Credit to both sides today. I don’t think we’ll face much tougher opponents this season and I think our lads acquitted themselves very well. Well done - SC

Man of the Match: Marcus Taylor – another solid performance including a couple of match saving tackles late on

Improving Player:  Tom Oldland – excellent effort and contribution as always

SPL Division Four

Guildford Saints Blues 9 – 3 Churt Royals Colts (Davis 4, Edwards 3, Craig 2)

The Blues thrashed a poor Churt side despite some woeful defending and goalkeeping in the second half. Storming to a 6-0 half time lead, thanks to some excellent attacking play, the Blues looked to be strolling to their second league win of the  season. A half time reshuffle though seemed to weaken the side as a defensive unit rather strengthen it and our failure to press opponents, win the ball cleanly or clear our lines lead to the side conceding three very sloppy goals. Despite this though we continued to attack with speed and width and were able to score three fine goals of our own so we were never in any danger of letting the lead disappear.

Michael Bell had a fine match in midfield with tigerish tackling and some excellent distribution. Tom Oldland also looked extremely assured when switched to midfield in the second half.  James Busby proved an able deputy to the missing Dominic Dubois when playing the holding midfield role in the first half. But our best players today were the three attacking players Harry Edwards, Ed Davis & Jack Craig who all attacked with speed and aggression and took their chances really well. Edwards, in particular, was always a danger to the opposition.

Managers Comments: A comfortable win that showed the best and worst sides of this Blues squad. Abject defending but excellent attacking. I take some responsibility for the formation switch at half time but, even so, the players themselves need to work more on the defensive side of their game… guess what we’re doing in training next Saturday!! - SC

Man of the Match: Michael Bell – fantastic work rate and excellent distribution

Improving Player:  Harry Edwards – a constant threat to opposition full backs

SPL Division Four

Feltham Athletic Youth 0 – 2 Guildford Saints Blues (Davis, Edwards)

The Blues started life in Division Four with an exciting win at Feltham Park on a sunny Sunday lunchtime. Playing a 4-5-1 formation the Blues showed commitment and good effort across the whole pitch against a resolute and hard working opposition. There were chances at both ends and both goalkeepers were in fine form with the Blues keeper James Chadwick making a flying penalty save at a crucial time just after half time.

The difference between the sides was in the finishing. Blues first goal came from a Harry Edwards free kick that bounced off the bar, Jack Craig headed the rebound but the keeper could only parry it to the feet of Ed Davis who blasted the ball home.

Edwards got himself on the score sheet too shortly before half time when an inswinging corner caught everyone by surprise and floated directly into the net at the far post.

Both sides continued to create chances in the second half as inevitably the teams tired in the heat. Lawrence Bird forced the Feltham keeper into a tremendous save shortly before the end and Edwards was nearly on target again when a late free kick hit the top of the bar.

Managers Comments: Great start for lads. This win should give them the confidence to push on from here. Particularly impressed with the work rate of the defensive players throughout the 70 minutes. Well done - SC

Man of the Match: James Chadwick – a confident performance and some great saves

Improving Player:  Josh Henderson – a dynamic performance at right back
